What I’m Reading – 11/10/2017

At the end of each week, I round up some of the articles I’ve read recently that I think you will find interesting. Here’s what’s going on this week:

• How God Has Upheld Connie Dever (Tilly Dillehay, TGC) If you did not know, Mark Dever’s wife, Connie Dever, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2013. Throughout her journey, she journaled about her physical suffering and spiritual life. Those reflections have now been compiled in the book He Will Hold Me Fast: A Journey with Grace through Cancer. Cancer affects almost everyone’s life today; so, I know this book will be spiritually life-giving to you or someone you know.
• Bodies Of 26 Female Teenage Migrants Found In The Mediterranean (Willa Frej, HuffPost) This story is a reminder of our need for Christ’s return to make all things new. Maranatha, King Jesus.
• Luther’s Jewish Problem (Bernard Howard, TGC) Martin Luther contributed to the church greatly. But, we must not romanticise him as faultless. He had blind spots in his life and theology. A problematic blindspot of Luther was his hate for the Jewish people. As Howard writes,
  

  Our memory of Luther must be tempered with sadness because of his sin and its consequences.

• Sola Scriptura Then and Now (Don Carson, TGC)
  

  Sola scriptura is no mere slogan, a creedal point to be checked off with approval from a list.Either Scripture establishes what the gospel is, calls people back to the gospel, and transforms God’s people with his Spirit-anointed gospel truth, shaping them into conformity with his Son, or it is but an empty boast.

• 500 YEARS: 5 biblical charges for our day (Doug Mize, Baptist Press) Mize reminds us that the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation is more than a celebration; it’s a charge. Now that we have looked backward in celebration, let us look forward to how a new work can begin for the next 500 years.
