What I’m Reading – 8/18/2017

Below are some of the articles and books I’ve read recently that you may enjoy checking out.

“Did Fundamentalists Invent Inerrancy?,” (John Woodbridge, TGC) — This survey of the historic doctrine of inerrancy is strong and convincing. The author ultimately argues, “The doctrine of biblical inerrancy is no late imaginative creation of A. A. Hodge and B. B. Warfield in 1881 or of twentieth-century American fundamentalism. Rather, it’s an essential evangelical belief based on a biblical warrant. It resides squarely within the Augustinian tradition regarding the Bible’s truthfulness. Both Roman Catholics and the Protestant Reformers affirmed the church doctrine.”

“One in eight American adults is an alcoholic, study says,” (Christopher Ingraham, WP) — The rate of alcolism is on the rise among U.S adults. This is a troubling trend, and churches and pastors must be ready to care for those who will be left wounded.

“Why I Gave Up Alcohol,” (D. L. Mayfield, CT) — As a follow-up to the previous article, this is a wise and helpful article from a few years ago. (Login required)

“Facing Our Legacy of Lynching,” (D. L. Mayfield, CT) — Mayfield powerfully calls us to remember the darkness of our past when it comes to racial prejudice and violence.

“We Are Equally Sinful. We Are Not All Equally Broken or Toxic.” (Brad Hambrick, BCC) — Hambrick helps untangle the sometimes unhelpful application of a good principle—namely, that we are all equally sinful.

“Two-Thirds of Americans Admit They Are Sinners,” (Bob Smietana, CT) — “Most agree with Romans 3:23, but disagree on what to do about it.”

Exalting Jesus in Isaiah, (Andrew M. Davis) — This is one of the newest additions to the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary Series, which I have the privilege of co-editing with Tony Merida and David Platt. Davis does an excellent job expounding the glory of Christ through the rich and sometimes difficult terrain of Isaiah. If you need help understanding this amazing OT prophet, pick up this book!
